Seacon Transforms Dreams Into Hard Reality

Michael Seay, owner, Seacon Construction.

Seacon ConstructionÕs work can be seen all across Ventura County; and their list of clientele reads like a whoÕs who of the rich and famous.

Located in Thousand Oaks, Seacon holds a general contractorÕs license, with additional licenses for concrete masonry and home improvement. They cater mostly to the influential and well off. Their jobs consist of taking the creative ideas of architects and designers and converting them into hard realityÑinto solid concrete objects of beauty, balance and grace. This is the art of hardscape; which is literally decorating landscape with concrete and masonry. And Seacon is one of the best at what they do. Their creative, artistic flair is practically balanced by production which allows for competitive pricing, while maintaining the high quality for which they have become known. Truly an art form.

Michael Seay began Seacon Construction in 1980. Only four years earlier he had graduated from UCSB (Santa Barbara) with a degree in Environmental Studies. Normally a limited field anyway, the sluggish economy at that time rendered his situation jobless for his chosen career. So he fell back on his previous experience in the construction industry, gained mostly during the summer breaks, and began doing small jobs in and around Santa Barbara. In 1985 he moved to Thousand Oaks and found a niche and a need for his skilled trade. Michael loves the challenge of this work: the ability to turn concept into reality with your hands. And he loves working outdoors. He also loves the challenge of growing his company.

Starting from near nothing in 1980, Seacon now boasts 100 employees with last yearÕs annual sales in excess of $8 million. For the first time in its 20 year history, Michael is leveling off the growth of his company. Perhaps so he can catch his breath. Up until 3 months ago he ran both the field and the office, working some 70 to 80 hours a week. But now he has hired a field supervisor and "only" works 50 to 60 hours a week, focusing his efforts on the office work. They mostly do private work, with only about 2% being public. Residential homes accounts for the great bulk of their projects. But one large commercial enterprise a number of years ago turned into their single largest project. This "Mountain View" housing track in Calabasas, some 400-500 homes strong, required decorative flatwork, driveways, and retaining walls. The project went on for about 7 years, and was worth an estimated $10 million to Seacon. Their average job is in the range of $40,000 to 50,000.

Their business is entirely referral-drivenÑno sales, no adds. And they have more than they can handle. After the company levels off for a while, and Michael has had a chance to review and inspect all aspects of its operation, he foresees expansion into San Diego County. Perhaps by next summer, he says, they will open a division there. "I have a number of contacts in San Diego. The work is there waiting for me. It is all referral driven, just like here."

the veneer and hardscape work. (Above) Using one of six Mustang skid steer loaders from Qualls Equipment to

To do this unique kind of work requires equipment like this: 6 Mustang skid steer loaders, 3 concrete pumps, jack hammers and compressors, a backhoe, a Bobcat and about 15 trucks. Being from San Diego, and having "never really grown up", Michael spends his spare time surfing in Ventura and Malibu. He also enjoys quality time with his family. His son TyÑ21, followed by his two daughters, BritneyÑ18, and MishaÑ17. Together they love to go houseboating, skiing, and snowboarding.

Michael Seay hard at play.

Being an environmentalist, Michael is concerned about his impact upon the land. But one wouldnÕt image Mother Nature getting too upset over the objects of beauty they create for their grateful clients. Perhaps they are engendering a love for the natural. At any rate, their strong growth is proof that society loves what they do. Seacon is situated well for a rewarding future.
