ryce Swaim, owner and operator of RDWS Ltd. Bobcat, acknowledges that one of the company’s greatest challenges has been proving to customers what a new company is capable of performing. RDWS Ltd. Bobcat was started by Bryce two years ago. It is also of note that Bryce is twenty years old. Bryce’s father Ronnie is a general contractor and owner of a framing company with over two decades of successful operation in San Diego County.

Bryce grew up in the construction business. He was able to achieve a life long goal of owning a construction company shortly after graduating from El Capitan High School. “I had been working with heavy equipment for years,” said Bryce. “I worked with my dad during summer vacations. In high school I grew oat hay for my FFA class and operated equipment. It’s just been something I’ve always done.” Bryce readily acknowledged that his family played an important role in helping him start the company. “My dad and my uncle had a lot of experience in the construction business. Their knowledge was a big help getting the company started.”

And what a start RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has had. In two short years the company has more than doubled its revenues and greatly expanded its operations and equipment inventory. Located in El Cajon just off of Hwy 80, RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has worked on numerous projects throughout the San Diego County area and east out to Palm Springs. The company initially began handling brush abatement projects but quickly expanded into grading, excavation and demo projects. “I have been extremely fortunate to work for various contractors.” said Bryce.

RDWS Ltd. Bobcat is just completing work on the County Operations Center in Clairemont Mesa. The project would initially seem relatively easy. RDWS Ltd. Bobcat was to dig trenches for new electrical lines that were being installed at the center. The trench was 1000 ft. long, 3 ft. deep with widths ranging from 18 to 36 inches. Approximately half of the trench had to be dug through corrugated asphalt. This required special attention be paid to those areas. No sand or dirt was allowed to get into that section of the project as it would clog the ports. The entire area had to be vacuumed of all debris rather than merely swept down under usual circumstances. In all, approximately 2,500 sq. ft. of asphalt was removed, along with 375 yards of dirt.

Another project RDWS Ltd. Bobcat recently completed with Casper Company was located out at Legoland California. The company had to demo the mini harbor at the entertainment park. This was done in order to clear the area for construction of the park’s “mini Las Vegas” site. Once again this project came with its own unique challenges. Much of the work had to be accomplished using forklifts with hoppers due to the requirements the site imposed. In addition, this work could only be accomplished in an extremely limited time frame. The RDWS Ltd. Bobcat crew was only able to work between the hours of 3:30 AM and 9:00 AM when the park was shut down from operation. On the final leg of the project RDWS Ltd. Bobcat worked a 26 hour shift in order to get the electricity installed.

RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has dealt with challenges on demo projects as well. The company recently finished work at the Agua Caliente Casino in Thousand Palms. “They were expanding the electrical room in the building and we had to demo the entire floor. We were digging up nothing but buckets of sand once we knocked out the floor,” said Bryce. The project covered some 2,500 sq. ft.

In addition to the demo projects, RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has completed a number of projects at Palomar and Gillespie Airports. These projects have been for an electrical contractor. The company recently completed work demoing out the old lights for the taxiway at Gillespie. Work had to be completed at night so the runway could be operational during daytime hours. RDWS Ltd. Bobcat dug trenches for the installation of twenty lights and two electrical vaults. They completed a similar project at Palomar Airport as well recently.

The company is gearing up for another airport project which should start production in the beginning of July. RDWS Ltd. Bobcat will be digging 2,800 ft. of trench at Palomar Airport for the installation of high voltage electrical power line that is going directly to the control tower terminal. They will also be digging and installing seven vaults as part of the project.

Bryce was quick to note that the two equipment dealers RDWS Ltd. Bobcat deals with have been instrumental in getting the company off the ground and integral to its success. “Dan Walsh at RDO Equipment and Frank Garcia at Miramar Bobcat have both been a big help when it comes to getting equipment and service. Dan has backed us and been there 100%,” said Bryce. “They have really been there for us and been a big part of the reason why the company has been a success.” Among the company’s inventory of equipment, RDWS Ltd. Bobcat currently has a John Deere 35D excavator. They recently purchased a new John Deere 317 skid steer.

RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has a small employee base, but Bryce points out that the main crew workers are also responsible for the company’s rapid growth and success. Zach Locker has been with the company just under a year. Zach is an equipment operator for the company. “Zach has played a key roll in the company,” Bryce explained. “He is a big reason we have been able to double our revenues, increase our equipment inventory and expand.” Duane Wells is an operator/laborer. Duane has been with RDWS Ltd. Bobcat about seven months, but it is already obvious that Wells is a swift learner and will play an integral role in the company’s further growth.

“One of the biggest challenges we have is trying to prove ourselves to new customers,” said Bryce. “We have been able to accomplish this by the work that we do for our clients. We are different than a lot of companies, because of the people that work here. We all went to school together, and we grew up together. We are like a family that is trying to build something together and looking for longevity.”

RDWS Ltd. Bobcat has already proven they are up to the challenge and can handle any type of project they take on. The company is already building a reputation for itself through hard work, dedication and skill. RDWS Ltd. Bobcat is an up and coming construction company that has proven it has the right stuff to succeed. Cc
